Wondering what to do with a fallen tree after the storm? Why not transform it into a bench, table, or stool? Give that tree a second chance.
Whether admired in a magazine photo or experienced firsthand in a home or country inn, rustic wood furniture commands attention and inspires craftsman and woodworkers alike with its rugged yet simplistic feel. These handmade works of art are a beautiful addition to the home and some exceptional pieces have been known to sell for thousands of dollars. Creating Unique Wood FurnitureWhat's involved in creating authentic wood furniture? First and foremost is selecting the perfect, or rather an imperfect piece of wood and capturing its essence much like an artist capturing his subject on canvas. The wood need not be of a rare or exotic variety to serve its purpose. Common woods like pine or oak can also produce both functionality and beauty. In some cases, the irregularity of the wood is what makes it perfect for creating a unique centerpiece. For instance, a slab carved from the trunk of a cypress tree is noteworthy for its irregular outline and rich tones. Sealed with a lacquer finish, this type of wood provides the perfect focal point as a coffee table or dining table. A fallen pine tree can be turned into a simple backyard bench with a minimal amount of effort as shown in the photo below. In this example, a notch was cut into each of the two end supports and the trimmed bench section rests on them. The addition of water resistant wood stain can also be applied to the exposed wood to help protect it over time. Always select solid woods that don't show any signs of decay or splintering. Allow them to cure in a dry location such as a garage or shed. The curing process can sometimes take up to a year before the wood is ready for use. Kiln drying is another faster option, but is usually only available through sawyers and lumber yards. Finding Wood for ProjectsNot everyone has a fallen tree lying around the backyard waiting patiently to be carved into art. Where does one go to acquire logs or cuttings for rustic furniture projects? One potential source is to contact a local tree trimming service and ask if they have any remnants available for free or for purchase. Explain what the wood is needed for and they may be able to set some aside if they don't already have some available. Another good source is a short drive around the neighborhood after storm damage. This is also a good opportunity to take out the chain saw and offer to help the neighbors with removing fallen trees. Last but not least, watch the newspaper ads for people needing trees hauled away. Whatever can't be used for projects can be used as firewood. Rustic wood projects can be as simple as a bench or as complex as a dresser or porch swing. Other fun projects include building a rustic table or chair, clock face, or chest. Save smaller pieces for creating pyrography art. Be creative and let the wood be a guide.
